Time
to update you on my trip to Seattle a few weeks ago. First off, Kara's
cat. I love this cat, he's Javanese, an offshoot of Siamese. They
have fur as soft as rabbits, and oh those eyes....
Just an interesting airplane picture.

First we went to Cannon Beach on the Oregon coast for a sandcastle
building contest. I love the "lights out kit" that was on the
fireplace mantle. It had candles and matches inside. "Is there
something important you guys aren't telling me?" Cannon Beach area is
where Lewis & Clark first saw the Pacific ocean.

This was just the beginning of the crowd that came to see the contest.

The building is pretty low tech, but then, they are working with a kind
of low tech material.

It was amazing at how meticulous some of the teams were. This gal
spent around 4 hours making a 'marquee' of the name of the sculpture
and the team name. She's used files, small paint brushes and a straw
for blowing away excess sand. Not surprisingly, a lot of masonry tools
were used.

All ages got involved. I think this guy was a novice. :-) He
eventually lost his balance and wound up sitting on his castle, but mom
was having a great time.

There were a LOT of sculptures so I just picked the best ones to show.
Everyone had a 20x20 foot square to work, so you can imagine how large
they were.

It took me a bit to realize the pun here. The cars are driving into a
factory and coming out as jelly jars.

This is shot from the end, you can see how far down the beach they
stretch.

My grandfather use to work with wood after he retired and drift wood
was one of his favorites. He would have love this piece I found hanging
on the side of a house in Cannon Beach.

The weather was comfortable and I love the rain so the frequent small
light showers made for a perfect day.

The court yard of where we stayed. Lovely. Inviting. Peaceful.

This map was in the info folder in our room. Cannon Beach is just a
small ocean side tourist town, but that last line was a hoot. The next
picture is a close up so you can read it.

Remember the movie Goonies? This area is where the filmed part of it.
Apparently two tectonic plates meet here and pushed up the rock
formations.

This is one interesting bridge. Instead of extending it from shore to
shore, part of it is a road just above the water.

On our way home to Seattle, we stopped by one of our Mecca's. Frantz
Art Glass is biggest supplier of Moretti glass in the U.S.

Kara doesn't have much of a green thumb (wonder where she got that
from) but she grows a mean orchid.

And the main reason for the trip. After struggling for 10 years in
junior collages, Kara put
graduation on a fast track. She had enough credits to wound up
with a degree in
geology and anthropology. This was on the wall and unfortunately,
the other
graduation pictures turned out too blurry. sigh

Mt Rainier from the plane. Or should I say, just the top part of
Rainier that sticks up above the clouds.
